COOKEVILLE, Tenn. – SIUE and Tennessee Tech will hope for better weather conditions Sunday as the two teams continue their Ohio Valley Conference softball series.
Tennessee Tech won the first game of the series 4-2 Saturday in the opener which was delayed for two hours due to poor weather conditions. The game was played in a continuous drizzle which made for difficult play but did not have an effect on the outcome of the game, noted SIUE Head Coach Sandy Montgomery.
"We didn't pitch well. We didn't hit well. We didn't field well. You're not going to win when you do that," said Montgomery.
The two teams will play the final two games of the series in a Sunday doubleheader. The first pitch is slated for noon with a second game scheduled for 2 p.m.
The Golden Eagles, 18-24 overall and 12-11 in the OVC, used a pair of solo home runs by Samantha Everett and Angi Sakamoto in the bottom of the fourth to take the lead for good Saturday.
SIUE hurler Amanda Lambrecht allowed just five hits and struck out four against the Golden Eagles. The Cougars dropped to 19-24 overall and 10-11 in the OVC.
SIUE was limited to three hits by Tennessee Tech hurler Holly Thomas. All three hits came in the fourth inning.
Down 1-0 in the fourth, Chelsea Yankolovich singled up the middle to start the inning and would then get into scoring position with a stolen base. After a pair of infield outs, Brittany Toney reached on an infield hit to drive home Yankolovich. Toney would later score after she stole second and scored on an RBi single by Rachel Coonrod.
Tennesse Tech regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with the home runs and added a single tally in the fifth for the eventual two-run win.
The Cougars will look to get back on track for games two and three of the series. "We need to play well. If we play well, we win," she said.
