SPARTANBURG, S.C. – SIUE 125-pounder Freddie Rodriguez has been named the Southern Conference wrestler of the week for all competition from Nov. 16-22. The selection is made by the league office.
Rodriguez went 4-0 on the week en route to winning his weight class at the Joe Parisi Open in St. Charles, Missouri. All four wrestlers that Rodriguez beat were from teams ranked in the top 25 nationally.
The senior from Lansing, Michigan, opened his tournament with a 13-5 major decision over Travis Piotrowski of No. 11 Illinois. He followed that up with consecutive falls, pinning No. 24 Chattanooga's Cody Hill in 3:00 and No. 3 Missouri's Chase Brannan in 1:20 to reach the title match. He then took on another wrestler from the third-ranked Tigers and picked up an 11-4 decision over Aaron Assad for his second tournament title of the season.
Rodriguez, the reigning SoCon champion at 125 pounds, improved to 8-0 on the season and sits at No. 11 in the Intermat rankings. The weekly SoCon award is his second, having taken the honor on Feb. 23 of last season.
SIUE opens the dual portion of its schedule when it hosts North Dakota State and Indiana on Sunday, Dec. 4.
