EDWARDSVILLE, ILL. -- The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville women's basketball team earned a trip to the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Tournament.
The Cougars, 20-8, will face fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference West Division foe Drury, 22-8, in the first round Friday at 8:30 p.m. in Romeoville, Ill. The game will be broadcast live on WSIE FM 88.7 and on SIUE Web Radio at .
"We are just happy to be going to the regional tournament again after six seasons," said SIUE women's basketball coach Wendy Hedberg. SIUE last competed in the NCAA Tournament in the 2000-2001. It is SIUE's fifth invitation to the NCAA postseason, including a play-in game in the 1993-94 season.
SIUE already has faced Drury twice this season. Both times Drury came out on top. The Panthers edged the Cougars 66-64 at the Vadalabene Center on Jan. 25. Drury made it two wins with a 70-67 victory at Springfield, Mo. on Feb. 8.
"Both games were decided by a total of five points so if we would have gotten a break here or there things could have changed," said Hedberg. "It is a good draw for us because we know them, and it's a game the kids can go into having confidence," said Hedberg.
If the Cougars go on to defeat Drury, they will play the winner of the Lewis vs. Bellarmine game in the regional semifinals. Lewis is the top seed in the NCAA Division II Great Lakes Regional Championships.
